Things to Do
Lake Gregory is a reservoir and the heart of the Nuwara Eliya. Lake Gregory was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. The lake and the surrounding area make up the Gregory Lake Area.
Seetha Amman Temple is located approximately 5km from Nuwara Eliya. The temple is located in the village of Seetha Eliya. This place is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive demon king Ravana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman or Rawana's elephant.
Hakgala Botanic Gardens, about 28 hectares in extent, lie under the shadow of the Hakgala Rock. The Botanic Gardens are locally reputed for their collection, the rose garden, Magnificent trees, indoor plants, flowers. The climate of the Gardens is subtropical, cool and fresh. There are over 10,000 species of flora planted here and during the Spring season in Nuwara Eliya.
This plains is located few kilometers off Nuwara Eliya town. The main attraction of Moon Plains is the mini Worlds End at the edge giving a 360 Degree view of the surrounding peaks and towns. The plains is home to Elk, wild buffaloes, dear and many types of birds. This area is also visited by leopards.
Pidurutalagala is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, at 2,524 m (8,281 ft). It is located close to the city ofNuwara Eliya, and is easily visible from most areas of the Central Province. The peak is currently designated as an "Ultra-high security zone" and is protected by a large military base.
Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montage grassland and cloud forest. Many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals, and the park is also an Important Bird Area. The sheer precipice of World's End and Baker's Falls are among the tourist attractions of the park.
Galway's Land National Park is a small national park and have been declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 27 May 1938. The Galway's Land was elevated to the national park status on 18 May 2006. Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka considers that Galway's Land as one of the most significant birding sites in Sri Lanka. Galway's Land harbors about 20 rare migrant bird species and 30 native species. The park has valuable floral species of both native and foreign origin.
St. Clair's Falls is one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and is commonly known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka". The falls is situated 3 kilometres west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District. The waterfalls consist of two falls and it is the 20th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.
Devon Falls is situated 6 km west of Talawakele, Nuwara Eliya District. The falls is named after a pioneer English coffee planter called Devon, whose plantation is situated nearby the falls. The Waterfall is 97 metres high and ranked 19th highest in the Island. Altitude of Devon falls is 1,140m above sea level.
